On behalf of the Austrian Committee „Free Mumia Abu-Jamal,“ we wish you all the best and especially to regain your freedom on your birthday!
Our committee was established in 1998 after the danger for you to be executed had become very evident. At the time we worked together with Amnesty International, but a few years later they left our allegiance, not wanting to support anymore our cause for your freedom. It is well known, that Amnesty International constrained from requesting a new trial.
In May, we want to screen the new film „A Long Distance Revolutionary“.We will do so in Vienna and we hope that many people will attend the screenings.
As you surely know, in Austria and Germany radical social cuts were not enforced, as they did in the Southern and Southwestern parts of Europe. However over a million impoverished people reside in Austria, a country of eight million inhabitants.
Thus a radical left movement exists which unfortunately is divided in segments. The most active members of our committee work in other left alliances such as the „Committee in Solidarity with the Resistance in Greece“ or the Committee against the Austerity policy in education sectors.
In October, we want to invite to Vienna, a leading representative of the HDP, a new left-wing Turkish and Kurdish party in Turkey and a representative from the left party of SYRIZA in Greece, the largest left reformist party in Europe. We want to discuss with them methods of building a powerful Left Movement, which is a real counterpoint to the growth of fascist forces in Europe.
