Deadline Sept. 5th

This is my strong note of support for the nomination of Mumia Abu-Jamal as a possible recipient of the Puffin Prize. He’s a brave and gifted man who underwent the worst kind of Hell for nearly 30 years until his death sentence was overturned, but drew from that experience extraordinary fortitude of spirit and has written prodigiously and wisely about societal injustice. I admire him tremendously.“

— Jonathan Kozol (Writer & Puffin Prize Winner)

I am a researcher and writer, covering Latin America, who has been privileged to meet some of the most remarkable figures of the past thirty years; Jean-Bertrand Aristide, Subcomandante Marcos, Rigoberta Menchu, Douglas Bravo, Pepe Mujica, to name but a few. Abu Jamal represents the same line of brave citizens, most of them unknown and unsung, who have risked everything to change society, paying a terrible price in the process.  Inside prison Abu Jamal has prised open a window into a hidden world, a world of mass incarceration and daily cruelty which will be looked upon, in future years, as one of the (many) great obscenities of our age.“

–From Writer Miguel McCaughan’s letter of support
