On the Anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.s death Bay Area Unions
gathered in solidarity with Wisconsin Workers whose unions were and
still are under attack. Many Unions came out to show support. That’s
the first half of the story.
Upper Management Union Bureaucrats told rank and file workers to come
support Wisconsin on the lunch break or after work…business as usual
and a weak effort at „solidarity.“ The ILWU, the International
Longshoremen and Warehouse Union, were the only workers to take the
day seriously. Rank and file members individually decided not to work
that day in solidarity with Wisconsin. Their employer, Pacific
Maritime Association, is suing them for lost work and revenue. This is
not the first time the ILWU members have stopped work for good reason.
They refused to ship to Chile when Allende was killed with the US
coup. They have taken action against South Africa during Apartheid,
against the Iraq/Afghan war, Israel…They have been putting
themselves on the line, have we?
