Sharon McKinnon: Marginalized And Casual Workers In SouthAfrica (Labor Video Project)

from Sharon McKinnon
Over the past few decades, the South African labour market has been restructured to adapt to the neo-liberal and globalised capitalist order. By the 1990’s most industries and companies resorted to mass retrenchments, outsourcing, labour brokering and casual and contract employment to improve their competitiveness and profits. This has had a devastating effect on workers’ livelihoods and living standards. Little wonder South Africa is ranked the highest in the world for inequality. In today’s show we discuss the situation of marginalised and vulnerable workers and how they’ve responded to their condition.
