Report of the Viennese events in solidarity
with Mumia Abu Jamal December 2008

The Viennese committee > Solidarity for Mumia Abu Jamal < organized two successful events for Mumia Abu Jamal in the context of a unity in action (with the Trade Union-youth GPA-DJP, Communist Student association KSV, Austrian Communist Youth KJÖ and the Group Class-Struggle GKK) within the international solidarity days around December 9th:

The lecture hall of the University of Vienna (NIG) was far too small in view of the crush of 220 people - about 20 people had to leave because of lack of space. The audience and the film were a great success ! After the introduction statement of Karl Fischbacher and the film presentation a lively discussion about the tragic events 1981 /82 took place. Another question was how far the demand for a new, "fair" trial stirs up illusions in the bourgeois, racist state.

On December 3rd we collected 74 signatures against the death penalty and for a new process and freedom for Mumia Abu-Jamal. From these lists we can obviously see that mainly students were interested in the case of Mumia Abu Jamal resp. the film. 15 persons put down their names on the list showing interest to be informed about solidarity actions for Mumia Abu Jamal. Our second initiative on September 6th was a money collection for the defence of Mumia Abu Jamal which yielded 160 Euros. We are very satisfied with the event on December 3rd, 2008 and want to thank particularly * GPA-DJP youth for the organisation work and financing of the film * KSV and KJÖ for the organisation of the university hall and * Annette Schiffmann for the productionwork of the German subtitles of the film " In Prison My Whole live "!

Information rally against the death penalty
in solidarity with Mumia Abu Jamal on December 6th, 2008

The committee and the unity in action in solidarity for Mumia Abu Jamal organized an information stand at the tram stop next to the famous City Hall Christmas fair on December 6^th. We tried to appeal to people to use their peacefull and consumptious Christmas mood for signing against the terrible death penalty and for the solidarity for Mumia Abu Jamal - and we also tried to collect donations for the defence of Mumia Abu Jamal. We managed to collect another 75 signatures against the death penalty acting with megaphone, leaflets and lists of signatures. But we were not successful concerning the donation collection on December 6th. According to this rally we also want to show gratitude to the activists of Amnesty International and GKK who have participated in the events on December 3rd resp. 6th!

This year no U.S. embassy visit

n 2008 the U.S. embassy (with the new Republican ambassador David F. Girard-diCarlo) refused the reception of a delegation of the Viennese committee for the first time. We may assume that David F.Girard diCarlo is a supporter of the death penalty and wishes this also for Mumia Abu Jamal. In fact we have missed nothing important. The only reason for demonstrations or delegation visits is that the embassy is obliged to report to Washington. Meanwhile the official refusal of the U.S. embassy has reached us and we have published our letter to the embassy and their refusal on the Austrian Mumia-pages:

What’s next?

The Viennese committee met on December 17th, 2008 to discuss the balance sheets of the December actions and prospects of the committee. The "old" Viennese comitee "Solidarity with Mumia Abu-Jamal" has enlarged. Till now the committee consisted of activists of Labournet-Austria, the left Socialdemocrat journal "mitbestimmung" and the Socialist Left Party SLP. On December 17^th 2008 activists of GPA-DJP-youth, KSV and KJÖ agreed to work within the committee on the platform basis of the defence of Mumia Abu-Jamal: a) For a completely new trial and b) to free Mumia Abu Jamal! About the next planned activities of the Viennese committee we will report soon.

Das Wiener Komitee >Solidarität mit Mumia Abu-Jamal< organisierte in den internationalen Solidaritätstagen für Mumia Abu-Jamal um den 9. Dezember im Rahmen einer Aktionseinheit (GPA-DJP-Jugend, Kommunistischer StudentInnenverband KSV, Kommunistische Jugend Österreich KJÖ, Gruppe Klassenkampf GKK) zwei erfolgreiche Veranstaltungen:

Der Hörsaal der Universität NIG war angesichts des Massenandrangs zu klein! 220 Menschen drängten sich schließlich in den und um die Sitzreihen. Rund 20 Leute fanden im Saal keinen Platz. Der Publikumsandrang und der Film waren ein Riesenerfolg! Nach dem Einleitungsstatement Karl Fischbachers und dem Film fand eine angeregte Diskussion über die tragischen Ereignisse 1981 /82 statt und die Frage, inwieweit Forderungen für einen neuen, "fairen" Prozess Illusionen in den bürgerlichen, rassistischen Staat schüren u.a.m.

Wir erhielten am 3. Dezember 74 Unterschriften auf einer Liste gegen die Todesstrafe und für einen neuen Prozess und die Freiheit von Mumia Abu-Jamal. Aus dieser Liste geht eindeutig hervor, dass sich vorwiegend Studentinnen und Studenten für Mumia Abu-Jamal bzw. den Film interessierten. 15 Personen trugen sich in die Liste ein, über Solidaritätsaktionen für Mumia Abu-Jamal informiert werden zu wollen. Die zweite Initiative am 6. 12. 2008 war eine Geldsammlung für die Verteidigung Mumia Abu-Jamals, die 160 Euro ergab. Wir können mit dem 3. Dezember 2008 höchst zufrieden sein und wollen uns ganz besonders bedanken bei: * der GPA-DJP-Jugend für die Organisationsarbeit und Finanzierung des Films * bei KSV und KJÖ für die Organisierung des Veranstaltungssaales und * Annette Schiffmann (Heidelberg, Berliner Mumia-Bündnis) für die Produktionsarbeit der deutschen Untertiteln des Films "In Prison My Whole Live"!

Informationstand gegen die Todesstrafe
in Solidarität mit Mumia Abu-Jamal
am 6. Dezember 2008

Am 6. Dezember organisierten das Komitee und die Aktionseinheit in Solidarität mit Mumia Abu-Jamal einen Informationsstand bei der Straßenbahnhaltestelle zum berühmten Rathaus-Christkindlmarkt. Wir versuchten dort weihnachtlich-friedlich und konsumfreudig gestimmte Menschen für Unterschriften gegen die grausame Todesstrafe und für die Solidarität mit Mumia Abu-Jamal und evt. auch zu Spenden für die Verteidigung Mumia Abu-Jamals anzusprechen. Mit Megaphon, Flubs und Unterschriftenlisten zu fünft (teilweise zu sechst) unterwegs gelang es uns weitere 75 Unterschriften gegen die Todesstrafe zu sammeln! Bei der Spendensammlung am 6. Dezember waren wir allerdings nicht erfolgreich. An dieser Stelle wollen wir auch noch Dank an die AktivistInnen von Amnesty International und der GKK aussprechen, die ebenfalls an den Veranstaltungen am 3. bzw. 6. Dezember mitgemacht haben!

Heuer kein US-Botschaftsbesuch

Die US-Botschaft (mit dem neuen republikanischen Botschafter David F. Girard-diCarlo) lehnte 2008 das erste Mal eine Delegation des Wiener Komitees ab. Es drängt sich der Verdacht auf, dass David F.Girard-diCarlo ein Anhänger der Todesstrafe ist und diese auch für Mumia Abu-Jamal wünscht. Wir haben nichts Wichtiges versäumt, Botschaftsbesuche gehörten zum Ritual, weil die Botschaft verpflichtet ist, solche Ereignisse wie Demos vor der Botschaft oder Delegationsbesuche nach Washington zu melden. Inzwischen ist auch die offizielle Absage der US-Botschaft schriftlich eingelangt. Absage und unser Forderungsbrief an die Botschaft haben wir in den österreichischen Mumia-pages veröffentlicht:

Wie weiter?

Das Wiener Komitee traf sich am 17. Dezember 2008, um die Bilanz der Dezemberaktionen und Perspektiven des Komitees zu diskutieren. Auf dieser Sitzung hat sich das Wiener Komitee "Solidarität mit Mumia Abu-Jamal" erweitert. Bislang kooperierten im Komitee AktivistInnen von LabourNet-Austria, der linkssozialdemokratischen Zeitschrift "mitbestimmung" und der Sozialistischen Linkspartei SLP. Am 17. Dezember 2008 erklärten sich AktivistInnen der Jugend der Gewerkschaft GPA-DJP, von KSV und KJÖ bereit, auf der Plattformgrundlage von Mumia Abu-Jamals Verteidigung im Komitee mitzuarbeiten: a) Für einen gänzlich neuen Gerichtsprozess und b) Für die Freiheit von Mumia Abu-Jamal! Über die geplanten nächsten Aktivitäten des Wiener Komitees werden wir demnächst berichten.
