Bekämpft den unerhörten Angriff -

Stoppt die Hinrichtung von Mumia Abu-Jamal

Wir fassen im Folgenden den englischsprachigen Text zusammen und fügen das Original an (LabourNet-Austria)

 

Ende April wurden mehrere AktivistInnen der Bewegung "Rettet Mumia-Abu-Jamal" zu einem Jahr auf Bewährung verurteilt, in dem sie unter behördlicher Aufsicht stehen, ihre Reisepässe abgeben müssen, sich nur in ihrem Bundesgerichtsbezirk aufhalten dürfen und es ihnen verboten ist, Kontakte zu verurteilten Schwerverbrechern - wie Mumia - herzustellen.

 

Um zu verstehen, was da passierte, muss man zurückschauen. Die Verurteilung hat nicht die Geschehnisse vor einem Jahr zur Basis (siehe genauer weiter unten), sondern viel mehr die Massenbewegung, die die Hinrichtung von Mumia zu verhindern droht. Anfang 2000 hatte eine Explosion von Aktivitäten für Mumia gebracht. Amnesty International veröffentlichte seinen lange erwarteten Bericht, in dem Mumias Verurteilung verurteilt und ein neuer Prozess gefordert wurde. Dann brachte eine nationale Konferenz Mumia-AktivistInnen aus dem ganzen Land, aus Europa und Japan zusammen, um eine Strategie für die Monate bis zu Mumias Habeas Corpus-Verfahren zu entwickeln. Dem folgten unmittelbar zivile Ungehorsams-Aktionen an beiden Küsten, wo Hunderte verhaftet wurden. Die Bewegung erreichte Massenöffentlichkeit durch die Veröffentlichung von Mumias drittem Buch >Alles Zensuriert<. Religiöse Führer im >Christlichen Jahrhundert Magazin< veröffentlichten eine Stellungnahme und auf einer ganzen Seite in der New York Times unterschrieben LehrerInnen für einen neuen Prozess. Als Nächstes kam es in den Medien zu Kontroversen wegen der Einladung an Mumia, die Einleitungsrede beim Antioch College anlässlich des 30. Jahrestages der Erschießung von Antikriegs-ProtestiererInnen auf der Kent State Universität zu halten. Alles das erreichte mit den 6.000 Menschen im Madison Square Garden am 7. Mai und den internationalen Massendemonstrationen in San Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia und auf der ganzen Welt am 13. Mai ihren Höhepunkt. Diese Ereignisse fanden zudem statt, als der Gouverneur von Illinois bei Exekutionen ein Moratorium einführte, sich die Polizeiskandale von der Ramparts Division in Los Angeles bis zu Polizeimördern in New York häuften und gegen die Explosion von Hinrichtungen in den USA der internationale Protest anwuchs. Mit Mumias Petition an ein Bundesgericht in Philadelphia wurde ein kritisches Moment in Mumias Kampf für Gerechtigkeit erreicht. Und beide Seiten wissen das. Also, wie reagierten die Behörden in Pennsylvania? Durch Einleiten eines neuen, fairen Prozesses für Mumia? Nein. Statt dessen verbot die Stadtregierung den BeamtInnen, der Black United Front Lohnsteuernachlässe(?) zu gewähren, da die BUF die Mumia-Bewegung finanziell unterstützt. Lokale Behörden begannen auch erneut mit einer gefährlichen Attacke gegen die MOVE-Organisation, indem sie gesetzliche Aufsicht über eines der MOVE-Kinder verfügte. Und jetzt versuchen sie mittels der Bundesgerichte die AktivistInnen der Mumia-Bewegung herauszusuchen und niederzumachen, indem diese auf Bewährung verurteilt und unter Aufsicht gestellt werden. Das traf auch zwei führende nationale AktivistInnen der Bewegung: Fances Goldin, die unermüdlich daran arbeitete, Mumias Schriften und die "Stimme der Sprachlosen/Unterdrückten" Millionen von Menschen zugänglich zu machen und die die finanziellen Angelegenheiten mit den Anwälten checkte. C.Clark Kissinger von Refuse& Resist arbeitete daran, die Mumia-Bewegung zu erweitern und zu vereinen, als einer der Hauptorganisatoren der zwei nationalen Führungskonferenzen(?). Von ähnlichen Verurteilungen waren auch Paul Magno und Kim Lamberty von der Katholischen Arbeiterschaft in Washington DC betroffen; ebenso Mitch Cohen von der Grünen Partei, der eine militante Aktion für Mumia in den ABC-Studios organisierte u.a. Clark Kissingers Frau wurde von FBI-Agenten aufgesucht, zu einer Gerichtsbefragung bestellt und aufgefordert, ihre Finanzen der letzten 10 Jahre aufzulisten. Beaufsichtigte Bewährung bringt das Leben der Betroffenen unter komplette Kontrolle: Finanziell und mit monatlichen Berichten an den Bewährungsbeamten, sie können jederzeit zu Hause oder in der Arbeit von Bewährungsbeamten besucht werden und es ist ihnen verboten, mit verurteilten Schwerverbrechern zusammen zu treffen - insbesondere mit Mumia. Das Gericht ging weiter und forderte die Auslieferung der Pässe und verfügte besondere Reisebeschränkungen. Z.B., Clark Kissinger wurde es verboten, nach Philadelphia zu reisen und auf dem 15. Jahrestags-Treffen der Bombardierung des MOVE-Hauses zu sprechen. Mitch Cohen wurde es verboten, nach Brüssel zu reisen, um dort auf der Umweltkonferenz zu sprechen. Offiziell wurde dies all unternommen wegen einer "Störung der gesetzlichen Ordnung" bei der Liberty Bell im letzten Juli. Die Liberty-Bell-Aktion war ein legaler Protest, an der Hunderte teilnahmen und in der Folge von Parkwächtern vorgeladen wurden. Glaubt die Regierung wirklich, damit die Mumia-Bewegung ruhig zu stellen? Es wird Opfer geben und Leute werden vielleicht ins Gefängnis müssen, ihren Job verlieren und das Ziel polizeilicher Unterdrückung werden. Jedes Mal müssen wir dem mit einer größeren Bewegung entgegen treten. Es gibt historische Bespiele ähnlicher Art: die Mc Carthy-Ära, die COINTELPRO-Operation gegen die Black Panter, die Einbrüche in die Büros der El Salvador-Gruppen und die Angriffe auf die FührerInnen der Ureinwohner und auf die Puerto Ricanischen FreiheitskämpferInnen. Jedes Mal ging die Regierung gegen die FührerInnen vor. Diese führenden AktivistInnen müssen von uns verteidigt werden!

Vor kurzem heulte der stellvertretende U.S.Staatsanwalt auf, dass es den Angeklagten an "Reue fehlen" würde. Er hat Recht. Die Angeklagten haben klar gemacht, dass sie sich niemals davon abhalten lassen werden, für die Gerechtigkeit für Mumia Abu-Jamal zu arbeiten. Können wir weniger tun?

Stop the Execution of Mumia Abu-Jamal

In late April several key activists in the movement to save Mumia Abu-Jamal

were sentenced to one year supervised probation, ordered to surrender their

passports, confined to the federal court districts in which they live, and

forbidden to associate with convicted felons – like Mumia. This struck all

observers as totally out of proportion to the alleged offense – a summons

from a Park Ranger for "failure to obey a lawful order."

 

To understand what has happened here, we have to step back and look at the

context of the attack, because the sentence was not based on the alleged

offense that occurred a year ago. It was instead based on the fact that a

mass popular movement is now threatening to prevent the execution of Mumia.

The early months of 2000 have witnessed an explosion of activity for Mumia.

First, Amnesty International released its long awaited report which

condemned Mumia’s conviction and called for a new trial. Then a national

conference brought together Mumia activists from all over the country,

Europe, and Japan, to lay out a strategy for the months leading up to Mumia’

s habeas corpus appeal. This was immediately followed by major civil

disobedience actions on both coasts in which hundreds were arrested.

The movement also began to reach a mass audience through the publication of

Mumia’s third book All Things Censored, the appearance of a statement by

religious leaders in Christian Century magazine, and a full-page ad in the

New York Times signed by teachers calling for a new trial. Next, controversy

erupted in the media over the invitations to Mumia to speak at the Antioch

College commencement and at the thirtieth anniversary of the shooting of

anti-war protestors at Kent State University.

 

All this culminated in 6,000 people packing the theater at Madison Square

Garden in a May 7 rally for justice for Mumia and mass demonstrations in San

Francisco, Chicago, Philadelphia, and internationally on May 13. These

events themselves occurred against a backdrop of the governor of Illinois

instituting a moratorium on executions in his state, burgeoning police

scandals from the Ramparts Division in Los Angeles to police murders in New

York, and a growing international outcry against the explosion of executions

in the United States.

 

With Mumia’s petition now pending before a federal court in Philadelphia, a

critical moment in Mumia’s struggle for justice is approaching, and both

sides know it.

 

So how have the authorities in Pennsylvania responded? By granting Mumia a

new and fair trial? No. By offering to look into charges of official

misconduct? No. By opening up the police and prosecutors files so the public

can judge for themselves? Again, no.

 

Instead, the city government has continued its ban on city employees

contributing to the Black United Fund through payroll deductions, because

the BUF provided fiscal services to the Mumia movement. Local authorities

also launched a new and dangerous attack on the MOVE organization by

attempting to transfer legal custody of one of the MOVE children. And now

they are trying to use the federal courts to single out and shut down key

activists in the national movement for Mumia by putting them on supervised

probation.

 

In imposing supervised probation the government has gone after two national

leaders in the Mumia movement whose activities on Mumia’s behalf have

greatly contributed to popularizing his case and his work. Frances Goldin

has tirelessly worked to promote Mumia’s writing and has enabled millions

worldwide to read the "voice of the voiceless." She holds his power of

attorney and handles his financial affairs. C. Clark Kissinger from Refuse &

Resist! has worked to unify and broaden the Mumia movement, as one of the

key organizers of the two national leadership conferences. Clark’s writings

and analysis have popularized the complex twists and turns of the legal and

political battle. We do not want to go into this next, and most decisive

phase of the struggle in federal district court with severe restrictions on

these two national figures.

 

Also hit with similar sentences were Paul Magno and Kim Lamberty from the

Catholic Worker in Washington, DC, who hosted the national action for Mumia

at the Supreme Court earlier this year; Mitch Cohen from the Green Party,

who organized a militant action for Mumia at the studios of ABC; Jane

Jackson from California; and Joe Brown from Washington.

 

No sooner had these probations been imposed than Clark Kissinger's wife was

visited by FBI agents at work and was served with a subpoena to testify

before a federal grand jury, supposedly relating to an investigation of a

former employer. She was also ordered to produce all her financial records

(which include joint accounts with Clark) for the last ten years! This is

nothing but a giant federal fishing expedition, using every legal mechanism

to bring pressure on a key leader in the Mumia movement and find out

everything possible about his finances and personal activity.

 

Supervised probation puts the lives of the probationers under complete

control. They have to turn in detailed financial reports on where all their

money comes from and how they spend it. They have to report monthly to a

probation officer, can be visited at home or work at any time by probation

officers, and are required to be employed (i.e., no fulltime volunteer work

for Mumia), and most important here, people on supervised probation are

prohibited from "associating" with convicted felons – especially Mumia.

But the court went even further, demanding the surrender of passports and

imposing a special restriction on travel. This was intended solely to stop

the political activity of those involved. For example, Clark Kissinger was

denied permission to travel to Philadelphia to speak on the 15th anniversary

of the bombing of the MOVE house. Or as another example, Mitch Cohen was

denied permission to travel to Brussels where he was scheduled to speak at

an environmental conference.

 

In theory, all this is imposed for "failure to obey a lawful order" at the

Liberty Bell last July. The Liberty Bell action was a righteous protest in

which hundreds of people participated and 96 people were given summonses by

Park Rangers. But that was last year, and this is this year, and the terms

of the struggle have changed. These sentences were designed to take out key

activists at a critical moment and send a message to the whole movement.

Does the government really think that the people are just going to back down

and give up? Think again. But at the same time we don’t have illusions about

what it’s going to take to stop the execution of Mumia. There will be

sacrifices made and people may go to jail, lose their jobs, and become the

targets of police repression. But we will never turn back. Every time they

come at us, we must go right back at them with an even greater movement.

There is a history to this sort of thing, going back to the McCarthy period,

the COINTELPRO operations against the Black Panthers, the break-ins at

offices of El Salvador support groups, and the attacks on Native American

leaders and Puerto Rican liberation fighters. Whenever the government wants

to go after a people’s movement, the first thing they do is to target the

leaders. These leaders have to be vigorously defended, because defending our

people and turning the attack back on the government are a necessary part of

winning the struggle to save Mumia.

 

The government might rather forget it, but there is also a history of the

people’s movements taking on these attacks and turning them into their

opposite – victories for the people in which the people’s movements grow

stronger. More than once we have made the government back off and wish they

had never launched the attack in the first place! For the people, such

attacks represent opportunities to be seized.

 

Now people everywhere need to make their voices heard in defense of those

under attack and step up their work for Mumia. A statement of protest has

been circulated by attorney Michael Warren, and is available to sign on the

Recently, in a legal brief to the judge opposing any stay of sentence while

these outrageous attacks are appealed, the assistant U.S. District Attorney

whined that these defendants displayed a "lack of contrition." Well, he got

that right! The defendants in the case have made it clear that they will

never be deterred from working for justice for Mumia Abu-Jamal. Can we do

less?
