Dear friends

Greetings!

Record volume of rainfall in 40 years submerged around 80 percent of
Metro Manila under water last Saturday, while surrounding towns and
provinces experienced flash floods and destruction of crop fields. At
least 86 have been confirmed dead due to massive flooding, while
hundreds more remain missing. The figures continue to rise. Mud and
dead animals cover various thoroughfares, making transport more
difficult.

Labor center Kilusang Mayo Uno, along with its members, was not spared
from the disaster. The national office in Quezon City, which is
located near a creek, experienced thigh-deep flooding, which soaked
tables, chairs, cabinets and some documents in the first floor. While
national staff members were able to rescue the computers and most
documents, computer tables and cabinets were wrecked due to soaking.
Walls were defaced, while power outlets were rendered unusable for
about a week.

KMU members, especially those living in urban poor communities,
experienced even worse, with some houses totally submerged in water or
worse, destroyed and washed away by floods. Others deal with huge
amounts of mud inside their homes, rendering facilities and equipments
broken. In the face of disaster, food, power and water supplies are
hardly accessible to hundreds of thousands affected by the tropical
storm.

In this view, we would like to seek financial and material assistance
for our affected members and communities. The Task Force Obrero, of
which KMU is a member, will be conducting relief operations and
medical missions in the next few days. It will also be part of the
"Bayanihan Alay sa Sambayanan", a disaster relief efforts of
multi-sectoral groups. We are urgently in need of medicines, old
clothes, mats, blankets, canned goods and other relief goods.

We would also like to seek your assistance for the repair and
rehabilitation of the KMU national office. At this critical point, we
urgently need help to restore the functions of the national office to
effectively address the concerns of its members and other citizens who
are victims of massive flooding.
